On 31 May, the Hazitek Strategic Project Orkesta: Comprehensive Solution for the Orchestration of Socio-Healthcare Services at Home officially concluded. This initiative designs the future of long-term care, highlighting the role of technology in connecting and orchestrating services in a personalised manner.
The future of the Silver Economy sector lies in enabling elderly people to remain in their own homes, without the need for residential care. To achieve this, and in contrast to the current reactive model, Orkesta proposes a proactive system that anticipates potential problems.
This involves using various integrated devices that allow family members and professionals to monitor the health status of elderly individuals and address their healthcare and psychosocial needs, preventing severe imbalances and deterioration, thereby contributing to their quality of life.
Strategic positioning in the Silver Economy sector
The closing meeting, held on 31 May, brought together the consortium consisting of 7 partners and 3 subcontracted entities at the ALCAD Electronics facilities in Irún. The session reviewed the main actions, highlighting and thanking the participation of 57 elderly residents from the Caser Residencial Betharram apartments (Hondarribia).
Additionally, the commitment of each participating entity to providing innovative services was emphasised: ALCAD Electronics, Caser Residencial, Eurohelp Consulting, Teknei, TESA-ASSA ABLOY, Asunción Klinika, Gureak, INGETEK, Vicomtech, UPV/EHU and APTES, who reviewed the main results of the project and their ambitions regarding impact quantification and future prospects.
This final meeting marks the conclusion of a project funded by the Hazitek programme, which supports Business R&D, promoted by Grupo SPRI in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government. The project received over €4.87 million in funding for a 33-month initiative, including 2 pilot stages in the assisted living apartments of Caser Residencial Betharram.
In scientific and technological terms, Orkesta has resulted in 15 scientific publications, the registration of a software library in the Intellectual Property Registry of the Basque Government, and, most importantly, the strategic positioning of the entities in the sector, with significant participation in European projects, public institution tenders, and innovative public procurement processes, among others.
New features thanks to Artificial Intelligence
For ALCAD, the innovative and strategic nature of the project has enabled us to work with emerging technologies to make the devices in our nurse-patient communication system smarter. We have developed sensing and communication systems that help make the daily lives of elderly people easier and safer.
Specifically, we have worked on AI-based technology for voice assistants, enabling them to understand and respond to user requests. In this way, we reaffirm our commitment to health and, more specifically, to the Silver Economy.
Moreover, notable results include those from EHU-UPV, which has developed AI models for emotion detection through voice processing.
Meanwhile, the Vicomtech Foundation has developed numerous tools for capturing behavioural data and deployed big data-based architectures (home sensors, security and closure, clothing traceability, images to characterise positioning, voice recordings, etc.) that have improved integrated asset management. Additionally, AI tools have been designed for natural language processing, anomaly and trend detection, and decision support systems, among others.
